Install on Synology

Set up MovieClaw on a Synology NAS with Container Manager in DSM 7.2, entirely from the GUI.

These steps use DSM 7.2. Synology's Docker package is called Container Manager from 7.2 on, and its Projects feature is Docker Compose. Comfortable with the command line? Use Install with Docker instead.

Step 1: Install Container Manager

Open Package Center, search for Container Manager, and install it. This also creates a shared folder called docker.

Step 2: Find your folders

  1. In File Station, create a folder named movieclaw inside the docker shared folder. MovieClaw keeps its data here.
  2. Find the shared folder with your media (say, video) and your download client's save folder. Check which volume each one is on under Control Panel → Shared Folder. On Volume 1 the path is /volume1/video, on Volume 2 it's /volume2/video.

Step 3: Create the project

  1. Open Container Manager, choose Project in the sidebar, and click Create.
  2. Name it movieclaw, set the path to the docker/movieclaw folder from step 2, and choose "Create docker-compose.yml" as the source.
  3. Paste the following, swapping in your own media and download folders:
services:
  movieclaw:
    image: movieclaw/movieclaw:latest
    container_name: movieclaw
    init: true
    ports:
      # Host port on the left. If 3000 is taken, change the left side (e.g. "8096:3000")
      - "3000:3000"
    volumes:
      # All runtime data. Back up this folder (it includes the hidden .secret_key file)
      - ./data:/app/data
      - /volume1/video:/media # ← your media folder
      - /volume1/downloads:/downloads # ← your download client's save folder
    environment:
      - TZ=Europe/London # ← your time zone
    restart: unless-stopped
  1. Click Next, skip the web portal settings, click Next again, then Done.
  2. Container Manager pulls the image and starts it. The first run takes a few minutes. You're set when the project shows as running.

Step 4: Open the web app

Go to http://<nas-ip>:3000. Slower models can take a minute or two on first start. Create your admin account, then continue with First-time setup.

When you add a library in MovieClaw, use the container path. In the example above that's /media, not /volume1/video.

Troubleshooting

Port 3000 is taken

Change "3000:3000" to something like "8096:3000" (left side only), then stop and rebuild the project and use port 8096.

Your download client runs on the NAS too

Mount its save folder into MovieClaw the same way. If the download client sees a different path than MovieClaw does, set up a path mapping under Settings → Download clients (下载器).

Hardware transcoding with the iGPU

See Hardware transcoding. Check that /dev/dri exists on your NAS first. If it doesn't, leave that setting out, or the container won't start.
