MovieClaw vs. Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin

How four home media servers compare on automation, indexers, clients, AI, pricing, and licensing, and who each one suits best.

Last reviewed 2026-10-04

Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin are mature media servers. They organize and stream the media you already have, and finding and downloading new releases takes a separate Sonarr and Radarr setup. MovieClaw handles finding, downloading, organizing, and playback in one app. Here's an honest side-by-side.

Where MovieClaw shines

  • One app instead of a stack: no more six or seven services with six or seven configs that all need to agree about the same library.
  • Built for Chinese private trackers: site configs, release-name parsing, Douban metadata, and Chinese subtitle handling work out of the box.
  • AI: subscribe, upgrade, and tidy up with a sentence. Outside agents can drive every feature through MCP and the CLI.

Where it falls short

  • Native apps are web and iPhone only. On TV and Android you'll rely on Infuse or Jellyfin clients.
  • The interface is Chinese only.
  • No public trackers, Torznab, or Usenet.
  • It's young (first released in 2026), so the community and ecosystem are far smaller.

Which should you pick?

  • You use Chinese private trackers and want to drop the whole stack: MovieClaw.
  • Your household mostly watches on TV and needs apps everywhere: Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin, or combine them with MovieClaw (see the last point).
  • You want fully open source and free: Jellyfin.
  • You want MovieClaw's automation but can't give up your media server: let MovieClaw handle subscriptions, downloads, and organizing, and notify Emby or Jellyfin to refresh after each import. See the end of Apps and players.
